80s Style

By

Big Hair, Neon and Ooh Shiny!

So you just can't get over the 80s. The hair, the clothes, the Aquanet.

You don't care that people tell you that legwarmers are out of style and that people now wear their gloves complete with fingers. Who cares? You're an individual and you're going to rock the 80s style. Even if it is the 21st century.

The Big Hair (And How To Get It)

One of the staples of 80s fashion was the big hair.

It was permed. It was ratted. It was full of split ends and if it could have talked, it would have been screaming for its life. But it was how we rolled. Later, we discovered that aerosol wasn't great for the Ozone and some felt guilty about their big hair habits. Others just bought those nifty plastic bottles and continued to spritz.

So, I guess you want that 80s hair, huh? Well, here's the lowdown on how to get it.

80s Hair Step by Step How-To

What you'll need:

  • A Hairbrush or Comb
  • Hairspray
  • Hair
  1. Begin with dry hair. The less oily the better.
  2. Lift your bangs or fringe with one hand. Spritz with hairspray.
  3. Taking your comb or brush, begin to "pull down" on the freshly sprayed hair. Repeat this step several times until you have a "pouf" of hair that sticks out way more than it should from your scalp.
  4. Repeat this process throughout that lovely crown of hair of yours until you have a ratted mess.

There are several ways you can do this and you can give it a bit of curl with your curling iron. Perms work best, however.

Legwarmers!

Legwarmers were a staple of early 80s style. Let's face it: they were kinda cute. You might balk. You might vehemently shake your head, but you know in your heart that you love legwarmers.

Legwarmers are a staple of dancewear and were supposed to keep your feet and legs warm. However, most people just wore them with jeans because they were cute.

Neon!

With the 80s came neon and lots of it. Neon clothing, jewelry and even hair became all the rage at the same time Michael Jackson was singing Thriller.

True 80s fashion consisted of making sure your hair was brightly colored and your tulle skirt was neon pink.

Tight Rolled Jeans

In the 80s, everyone tight-rolled their jeans. This consisted of making a fold with the excess denim at your angle, then rolling the jeans upward. The result was a bulky bit of fabric near the ankle so you can push your socks up over the bottom of your pants' leg.

It was the pinnacle of 80s fashion, I tell you!

Thanks, guys!

I was a kid during the 80s and LOVED it. I remember watching all the older kids getting ready for school on the bus (my school encompassed K-9th grade) and just being mesmerized.

My hair was always too fine for ratting and I had a heck of a time keeping my jeans tightrolled. :p
