The Cloverfield Monster
84What is The Cloverfield Monster?
Finally, the movie is out and now everyone has one question: what is the Cloverfield monster?
The movie left the monster shroud in mystery. Where did it come from? How did it get to NYC? What IS it?
This hub will give you a better idea of where to go to look for information from the Cloverfield viral campaign and pin together as much information as humanly possibly about the creature that is the Cloverfield monster.

What Is The Cloverfield Monster?
This is perhaps the most difficult question to answer.
The short form is: he's a monster. While there are some clues to his origin (see below) this still doesn't tell us much about what he is.
Going by looks, he seems both amphibious and reptilian in nature. He is gray and scaly, much like a dinosaur. He has long "arms" and shorter legs. He also has what looks to be smaller "arms" between his legs and frontal arms.
At best, he could probably be described as a sea creature. During what is the most up close and personal shot of the monster's face, we see that he has what almost looks like some sort of "gill" like feature on his face that expands when he breathes (at least it appears to be the result of his breathing). This seems to further support his title as "sea creature."
Where Does He Come From?
J.J. Abrams, producer of Cloverfield, says, "The concept for the monster is simple. He's a baby. He's brand-new. He's confused, disoriented and irritable. And he's been down there in the water for thousands and thousands of years."
So, essentially, he is a 1000+ year old baby. That's some baby!
According to some theories, the monster was disturbed by the work of Tagruato, a deep sea drilling operation and owner of Slusho, a corporation that makes high-energy drinks. If you'll remember, Rob Hawkins was to leave for Japan as he was named the VP of marketing of some company. That company? Slusho. While I've found no indication that this was ever mentioned in the film, it was mentioned on the character's MySpace page.
Another theory is that Tagruato was somehow using the monster for this operation. I find this theory to be a little farfetched, but you never know.
Why Is He In Manhattan?
He heard that there was a great sale on Manolo Blahniks.
As was said above, theories regarding Tagruato disturbing the monster from either a slumber or its home seem to be the most prevalent.
According to the viral marketing campaign, the monster's first attack wasn't actually Manhattan, but at one of the corporations deep sea oil drilling stations off the coast of Connecticut. While the news clip released by Paramount doesn't state that it's a monster that attacked (in fact, it is blamed on an extremist group by the name of Tidowave), it's pretty obvious by some of the clues given in the clip that this was the awakening of the monster.
The video below contains the news clip.

What Are The Smaller Monsters?
As you saw in the movie, the Cloverfield monster came with detachable friends.
Most seem to agree that the small spider-like monsters that fell off the monster were actually parasites (and perhaps what made the monster so irritable - you know, other than being shot at and such).
The parasites seem to be even more dangerous to humans than the Cloverfield monster himself. A bite from one of the parasites seems to cause a fatal amount of pressure to build up within the victims body, causing them to explode.
How these bites have affected the Cloverfield monster is unknown.

I was in the cinema watching "Gabriel" (not good anyways). Out of boredom, I came out of it and entered another room. There it was, "Cloverfield" in the scene where the main actor & actress were hiding under the bridge. The monster was attacked, and they're filming the process.
Then, suddenly the video recording changed, and they're both smiling to the camera at a place near the beach where many people are enjoying themselves. I didn't understand it, so I entered another room saw "Game Plan" starring The Rock and chose to go back to my actual movie in the end.
Love your hubs kelly, they're exhilaratingly interesting.
Cool hub. I haven't seen the movie but it does look interesting. Thanks for letting us know about the monster.
beautyfull hub kelly,
J.T
I have seen the ad for the movie but it hasn't come out yet in France -at least not in my remote village :-( I am looking forwards to see it.
Looking forward to actually seeing this... friend of mine just got a new HD, and some surround sound. :) We watched The Mist the other day, another fantastic monster movie. I have a review of it in my Hubs, which isn't really shameless promotion since I actually think it's an interesting read about a great movie. :)
Wow, nice facts about the monster and it's orgins.
Really great job on this hub. I've followed the whole Cloverfield phenomena and watched the movie several times, but it's nice to have a bunch of the viral marketing info all in one place.
Thanks for the theories! Can't wait to read more when the sequel comes out....
Very Interesting and cool information on this.
I really liked the movie. I thought the way it was presented, as being filmed by a handheld camera, was a unique concept and gave it a certain realism. I'm thinking there'll probably be a "Cloverfield ll," where we'll get more info on, and a better look at the monster.
vere interesting
Id like to know where you got your information from about where he comes from?
as in the film towards the end when you see the last flash back clip and there on the ferris Wheel. In the background you see the creature land in the water behind them, so i don't think that the creature could of been around for thousands of years!
My wife and I watched this movie tonight I thought it was pretty good .I did wonder where did the monster come from and did it die in the end ?
That news report was soooooo fake the CGI on it wuz crap!!!
And at the end when credits are on you turn volume up really high, listen and some1 is saying "help us" and i dunno who rewinded it and it says "its still alive!"
what about at the end when they are under the bridge and finally they die, then the film chnages to them being in the park going on the ferries wheel and the camera is looking towards the ocean if you look carefull on the image there is a boat on the water and right above the boat you can see something falling from the sky into the water. then the movie ends what is that about?
am one of the of the fanatics of clover field i know everything u need to know now u got half of that right its a baby but the moms in it too and so is another monster in the post showing the head of the statue of liberty head gone in the cornerof that poster theres like a turtle face and thats unknown of what it is it is going around that its another parasite and when the brige falls if u have the app u can remove the fog and its a human face its weird but it all makes sence its a legend a myth of the greek that was sopposed to be banished from greek books because it was against there religion or something like that if any of u have youtube accounts am doomman117 so send me a message if u want
i think that it might be the kracken and the parasites are the babbys of it and are feeding on manhatten ppl.
when your bit you dont explode they have to shoot you because you will turn into a larger parasite
This movie was awful because it didn't feel like a monster movie. The acting was bland. The plot was odd and the monster is the deformed cousin of the American Godzilla. My score for this movie is 2/10.
Very interesting thats proberly right, prety much thought that about it being from the sea but it would of been nice to have some clousure at the end of the film cus a sequel just would not work, just shows that some of these movie guys are assholes!
it was a cooll movie :) >-
Nice hub!
The movie was good (imo) but I am really disappointed that you pretty much NEEDED to follow the viral marketing campaign for the whole thing to fit together and work well.
I've seen more than a few movies rely on their marketing campaigns to flesh out their stories for them and I really hope the trend doesn't continue. Not all of us actually WANT to spend all day on movie websites trying to get backstory on a movie...
I loved Cloverfield and thought it was a great monster. In fact I thought it was the best monster movie since Carpenter's The Thing.
It does beg the question of course, if this monster is a baby then where is mommy. I suppose it's possible that a creature that large may have been concieved in some form of egg, if it was truly amphibious. But then, knowing how most amphibians and fish operate that would mean that a male would have to have fertilized the egg.
Unless of course it's an asexual creature, capable of reproducing on it's own. But this is all theory of course.
It's considerably harder to find fossil evidence of sea creatures that are currently still alive as ocean life tends to destroy any bodies pretty thoroughly once they are dead.
I thought the moster came from the sky because at the end of the movie you see something fall from the sky when they point the camera out of the ferris wheel or is that just debris that the monster just happened to throw over into that bay area. please let me know.

Great hub and I thought that monster was awesome! Especially when now a days the film industry seems to be having a hard time coming up with new Horror movie creatures! This film is deff mentioned on my horror creature hub so I am happy to see you recognized it as well! :)
Went to see this with my brother. Went in thinking its going to be a great movie, as did many others. At the end of the movie the theatre room was silent. Walking out everyone had the same thought as us. That the movie wasnt as good as it was made up to be. Bit of a shame really.
I agree with Jenny. For the most part. I thought the way the movie was filmed was a fantastic idea and my friend loved the whole film and was infatuated with it. The Channel 4 premier of it is on right now as we speak - er, type. It's a little better the second time, but the character filming it annoys me. Never mind, eh?
I saw it on Channel4 like just now
I downloaded it about 2 days ago after trying to think what the f*****g title was called, i was hopeing that it was good because i was looking forward to it but turned out it was good so happy as f**k:)
LOL,me again just wondering but is there any confirmation that theres gonna be anymore cloverfield movies because im using a college computer and most of the stuff is blocked:)
thank you
Interesting hub, good analysis of the cloverfield film...
Holy shit.
It looks similar, but I doubt thats the 'explainable' monster used in the film.
ok in the in of the movie were u see rob on the faires wheel the camera looks out in the far righ bottom u see something fall into the water its the monster so its clear to me that its from space
The thing that falls into the water is a sattelite look it up theres a whole story
I hope they bring out a continueum of Cloverfeid as it was very well made and had a very good storyline and wasn't that cheesy or crap. Also since there is still alot of questions it would be able to answer alot of those except the film was recorded through a cam and it was set in immediate danger but all i can say is that CF was a fucking good film and they better bring out another one somehow.
That was an interesting film, to me, it seemed liked the monster was some kind of alien or something from another dimension, great hub...
This was the cheapest excuse for a movie I've ever seen. My grandmother could shoot a better one---and she's DEAD.
finally saw the movie. i thought it was great. love movies that leave many questions
the monster was disturbed by a satelite of some sort. you can see it when they're on the ferris wheel at the end!
I recently saw this film. And I thought when the movie was advertised, I paused the commerical and played it back in slow motion on my DVR, that the creature looked like a dog. It kind of looked like of a deformed chihuahua. But after I had time to watch certain scenes of the actual movie, frame by frame, I found it to look like a rodent or a rat. I also had my children, nieces and nephews look at the movie. Then I had them to look at the movie frame by frame and they thought it was a rodent or rat. I think it was a rat got into some chemicals or testing was done on it, and it grew and escaped from some company and they didn't tell anyone. The creature continued to grow but very rapidly. I also think the parasites are flees and or ticks deformed and falling off of the rodent/rat. I know this maybe far fetched but it is the only thing that makes sense at this time. But to title this movie "Cloverfield" was stupid but also a great marketing ploy because the title refers to nothing in the movie but entices you to want more information and to want to see the film. What do u think now?
What I'd like to know is how this thing can withstand armor piercing anti-tank rounds, massive bombing runs, and, the coup de gras, a nuclear assault. What the hell is this thing the Hulk? Godzilla? Then again it's just a movie.
The creature has to be from space! And it can't be a baby since it was releasing "babies" from its skin while under attack. My theory, the creature is from deep, deep space (this would make it virtually indestructible) and needs to find a planet with liquid water, in order to reproduce. It then plunges through our atmosphere into the ocean where is uses the water to finalize the reproduction process. One complete, the creature comes onto the land and releases its offspring which go about eating everything in sight until they are big and strong enough to leave earth and repeat the cycle. Oh and by the way the "momma" dies after all her babies have hatched.

in the last scene(big wheel) something falls into the ocean, so I think it comes from space
i needed to know this. thank you. and when i saw the movie, i got sick
I like how even after it has been explained that the falling " object" at the end is a satellite and that it has been explained in backhistory..People are still saying the creature it from outterspace due to it falling from the sky at the end of the movie!
Its not a satellite. After the girl says, "Yeah...We'll see.", the camera beeps. after the beep, listen really closely and you'll here a huge roar....just after the "satellite" falls. But remember, satellites that are hundreds of miles in space that fall into the ocean always roar.
at the end of the movie nothing falls into the water. it is the monster splashing in the water. this may sound stupid but it's the truth. If it were a satellite the government would have said somthing. if it were a alien falling from space im sure it would have been bigger and made a bigger splash.it would make more sence as to what kelly said about the creature being 1000+ years old. Great movie overall, loved the monster and paresites.
The cloverfield monster represents 9/11.And the ignorance spread, which cannot be destroyed by tanks and guns. The statue of Liberty Face is prominent, and represents America and yes,the Mars Face, destroyed by Americas Politicians who refused to enlighten the World, and chose ignorance. You see Mars is about "for thine is the kingdom,Forever,AMEN"They discovered alien ruins of AMEN on Mars and are terrified that the people will panic that "God" is a dead humanoid Pharaoh, the Muslim flag is simply a picture of looking past the moon at Mars. Now the World is gripped in permanent religious ignorance, while the critical mistake was made to keep hiding the Mars face by changing the Mars photography 10 times. Now the people cannot become enlightened.See the building monster, see the dust clouds, the soldiers, the people of New York running across the Bridge to Mars that was destroyed. This is the real situation.
If you say you cant see the thing falling into the water, get a better tv trashey. have a friend watch it with you and see if they can see it, they will. Its in the top right corner, 3/4ths of the time I rewind the dvd I can see the black ogject in teh freeze frame.
And I just watched the end part again to let you know when.
Rob: Admit it, you are going to miss me a little bit right?
Beth: Ummm, ya...
The second she says ya, is when the object comes into frame and you can see it falling from the top right corner.
As for people saying it wouldnt be the monster becasue the splash would be bigger. Look at the white boat in the water "below" where the thing falls. Thats not some small dinkey sailboat, but it looks small due to the fact its far away.
BUT, as to the "roar" I dont think so, listen to it without actualy watching the movie. (shut your eyes) and you will hear the sound for for a good 4 seconds before the rest of the background noise fills in. Now watch it and listen, the "roar" is barley before the thing hits the water, but its also after its in the water. WOuldnt hear it underwater like that. Your prob just heaing shotty coney island machanics at its finest.
Also, google image "Cloverfield whale pic" Thats another factor saying "monster in the water" 4 dead whales with chunks taken out, and 1 skinned, what satalite does that?
oooo snap would be gone!!!
Did anyone else see the object fall into the water at the last flashback video? If so, does this mean another civilisation managed to contain the beast but were unable to kill it outright so just blasted it into space in it's prison which opened on contact with the earth? Thus making it a film about wrong place wrong time.
holy crap i thought it was when you get bit by parasites in cloverfield it was like i am legend and you die as a zombie
